Oseanic StarCraft 2 Championship Series
The Masters Cup is a partnered tournament of the Oseanic StarCraft 2 Championship Series (OSC). The OSC is the Oceanic, South East Asian, North American and Chinese regional championship, which follows a yearly season format, where players earn points for placing in all partnered tournaments.
The top 32 players ranked via the OSC Player Leader board at the end of the season are then invited to play in the 2 day minimum $5000+ Grand Finale to determine the yearly champion! OSC World Rankings were established in December 2012.
In 2014 OSC partnered tournaments gave away $29691 combined prizepool, ($ bounties, Terran Bonus initiative, Invitationals, and LAN events were not included in this!), we had 155 completed partnered tournaments (up from 77 last year, which equates to 100% growth), and saw 358 individual players with points earned (up from 138 in 2013 = 159% growth)
You can show your support towards OSC, and help us put on events for the community for just $8 USD per month! One less chocolate bar/One less beer at the pub/a couple less songs on iTunes, etc, and the money goes towards supporting the scene It's quite common place for players/casters to have a subscription option on twitch tv (which isn't an option for us), and we feel we have much more to give back in terms of entertainment, competition and rewards. Subscribers are also another way we can potentially market ourselves to prospective sponsors, which in turn will result in further growth.
We also provided supporters with bonuses such as event replay packs, and chance to win 1 hour of coaching from top tier players.
Without these companies contributing to our tournament it's fair to say the prizepool would be far smaller. But it's not just about the $'s. All these companies have a long history of supporting Starcraft 2 and esports in SEA. They care about the scene and our community. So many thanks to them all! If you esports fans, players etc can send them some love and thanks for supporting SC2 + the SEA Championship Series it would be appreciated in return. They all are leaders in their industry, so if it comes down to a choice between brands, pick these guys who support esports!
Silicon Sports are a Melbourne based company, responsible for the succesful Melbourne Barcrafts. They also have a quality SC2 team and academy, plus a dedicated casting team. They also do a lot of work in the DOTA community.
Thermaltake is a well known brand for gaming & DIY in Case, Cooler, and PSU for years. Due to the constant requests for keyboards and mice from gamers and end users, Thermaltake decided to create a series of gaming keyboards, mice, and headsets with the Tt eSPORTS brand. By using Tt eSPORTS, we want to extend our product lines into the gaming industry, and provide more ''personalized gaming'' gears to gamers and enthusiasts worldwide. With years of experience in gaming industry, Tt eSPORTS is committed to bring the most personalized and the highest quality weapons for the most competitive cyber battles.
There will be a change to the format of future Masters Cups, starting with the next one on November 20.
Non SEA residents/international players can join every 3rd 'open' Masters Cup. The 2 beforehand and 2 following are just for SEA players to compete amongst themselves.
Reasoning behind this is to encourage and help provide support and exposure for SEA/Aus+NZ players. Growing eSports in the region is one of our main goals in running this tournament, and we feel future sponsors shall also likely focus upon this market. We want to provide an enjoyable event for players to play with their neigbours and improve the scene across SEA.
However playing against Koreans and other non SEA players can also be great practice and exposure, thus we shall have an 'open' Masters Cup every 3rd month.
Unfortunately this means some regulars like KingKong and Soulman won't be able to play as often. I know many people have enjoyed watching them in recent cups, and from my own experiences they have been a pleasure to talk with, but the Korean Starcraft 2 scene is very large, and we are trying to create something similar here with our own players.
Thanks for your support and understanding.
Stay tuned for more big Masters Cup news coming this weekend, regarding sponsorship and prize pool increases!!
The international edition due for this Sunday, 25th August, will be pushed back a week to Sunday 1st September.
Also:
- We shall be starting earlier. 1pm AEST. Better time for NA, hopefully get a bigger turnout!
- Will be the last international edition for this season of SEA Power Rankings, lot of points of offer!
- Shall try a double elimination bracket, lower bracket best of 1 until 3rd/4th placing, where it will be bo3.
There will be a change to the format of future Masters Cups, starting with the next one on March 2nd*.
Players who have won 5 SEA only editions of the Masters Cup will be ineligible for future SEA versions.
They can still participate in the open global editions, every 3rd month.
Reason for this is to spread the money around more amongst the SEA players, rather than a few champions.
There are more SEA tournaments running than ever before, so there's still plenty of opportunities for those few effected.
We shall be trialling running Global/Open editions of the Masters Cup every 2nd month for a while, up from every 3rd. There are a lot of regular weekly cups running atm, which shall still ensure a good amount of SEA v SEA competition. Global MC's offer more OSC pts + exposure for our players.
Also with MC #41 complete, we see over $8000 won by players
Only bad thing was maybe you should've ended the video with the final engagement or something, idk, i didn't get to watch that game so i don't know what the final engagement looked like.
But otherwise, really good stuff, please stick around dude, more of this sort've thing is really cool!
Starting from the next edition, we will be running 2 Masters Cups per month, initial prizepool will be $100 USD (~130 Aud)
Some changes:
To provide regular NA access to OSC events, we shall be uprooting, and permanently hosting a Masters Cup on NA every second Sunday at 12pm AEDT (Saturday 6pm PDT).
The first fortnightly cup will be region locked to North + South American, SEA/ANZ + Chinese citizens.
The second fortnightly cup will be open to everyone (EU, KR, TW). Repeat.
Starting prizepool will be $100 USD ($75/25) covered by myself, but we'll see if we can't get that raised a bit. 410 OSC points will be the default starting allocation, running down to 32nd place.
ANZ/SEA players have been laddering on NA since the dawn of time. Many of our top players are/or have been GM on the server. It will be interesting to see how the regions matchup competitively on a regular basis.
ANZ/SEA/China have been sharing WCS access via NA for the last few years.
NA and above regions probably don't have the same support systems, and tournament oppurtunities that are available in Korea and Europe.
The timezones are manageable, whereas EU-SEA/KR is quite difficult. We still run events catered to EU where we can, but not on a regular schedule.
Talking with some NA players, managers, personalities, they all agree NA could do with more tournaments.
Started in Feb 2011, the OSC Masters Cup is a SC2 tournament run by members of the SEA community as a platform for players within the region to practice against each other in a competitive format, as well as global challenge versions to test vs the worlds best! There have been changes to format, eligibility, and frequency over the years (now twice monthly + global), but it has always remained a constant staple of SC2, particularly in SEA, and a prestigious event to win!
To celebrate #100, we will be running a $1000+ USD extended edition!
WardiTv will be the primary stream bringing you coverage of this special event.
Comment from Eddie, Masters Cup organiser:
We've made it to 100! What a journey! Approaching 7 years! This is where it all began for me. Running 3 GPD (Gold, Platinum + Diamond) events each Sunday, into a Masters Cup finale on the 4th Sunday. Back in the days before we had multiple regular weekly events in SEA/globally. From these humble beginnings and once a week of SC2, i've worked with many great people, made countless friends, and have been a part of what we as a community have now built up/the place we are at now, with the OSC putting on daily events, and myself working on SC2 every day.
Shoutouts to some of the past admins XanT, Rhuubarb and Namakaye, and big supporters at various stages of the events run, Bryan Choo from sc2sea, Chris Smith (formally ttesports) and the Blizzard ANZ team. I'm really proud to have kept this event running without fail, see it as one of the key foundations of what we have today, and a continued part of what we are building towards at OSC. Here's to another 100!
Even the smallest donations help keep sc2sea running! All donations go towards helping our site run including our monthly server hosting fees and sc2sea sponsored community tournaments we host. Find out more here.
